Activities - Biotopo Mario Dary
Description: Formerly known as the Biotopo del Quetzal, in Baja Verapaz. ‘El Biotopo’ is a protected area founded by Mario Dary Rivera, former director of San Carlos University in 1977. The reserve covers 1,150 hectares of primary cloud forest, from 1,500- 2,300 meters (4,920-7,545 ft).
The reserve was especially established in order to preserve populations of the Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno), the national bird of Guatemala.

Description: The forest village of Uaxactun is located 23 kilometers north of the Tikal National Park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Isolated by Tikal and set in the middle of the MBR Multiple Use Zone, Uaxactun’s 140 mestizo and indigenous families primarily subsist from the extraction of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) such as chicle gum resin, xate palm leaves, allspice and wild game meat.
